Job Description - Beauty Therapist
Therapists give treatments ranging from facials, make-up, manicuring and body treatments to electric depilation and waxing (removal of superfluous hair), and the treatment of some skin conditions such as open pores. A fully qualified therapist is capable of using various types of electrical apparatus. Therapists must know when to deal personally with skin complaints and when to refer a client to a doctor. It is usual to treat about eight clients a day in a treatment salon, which may be run by a cosmetic firm, an owner-manager, or occasionally as part of a hairdressing establishment. Sales Consultant Beautician Working in the perfumery department of a large store, in a luxury hotel, at home and overseas, on a big liner or at airports, sales consultants sell and promote their firm’s products, answering questions from potential buyers on skin care and make-up. They occasionally give talks at schools and colleges or to women’s organisations and some may travel for their companies at home and abroad. Hairdresser/Beautician The double qualification gives greater scope for employment and some may work as make-up artists in radio or television. Some progressive psychiatric hospitals employ hairdressers/beauticians in rehabilitation centres and work of this nature plays an important part in treatment and recovery programmes. Beauty Therapist A Beauty therapist is employed to make other people look and feel good. They offer a range of treatments including, make-up, facials, manicures, and waxing. Beauty therapists can work either self- employed, or for other people in hair salons, in the leisure and holiday industry, at spas and aboard luxury cruise ships and airlines such as Virgin Atlantic. Training & Qualifications Educational qualifications vary and formal academic qualifications are not always required. However, three GCSEs are needed to take a number of courses. City and Guilds and Edexcel (BTEC) offer awards. NVQs are available in Beauty Therapy, levels 1, 2 and 3. Private schools run courses leading to the award of their own diplomas to candidates who are usually over 18. Most good courses last from five to six months, although some are longer. Courses (lasting a few weeks) for sales consultants are usually at schools attached to a cosmetic houses, some of which demand a premium, which may be repayable after a period of working for the firm. The minimum age is usually 21 and experience in selling is required. Experience can be gained in a number of ways, the exciting option is at a holiday resort or even aboard a Cruise Ship, or alternatively you can gain experience nearer where you live at your local salon. An apprenticeship is a good way of getting into the world of beauty therapy; also there are a range of qualifications available to help with your career prospects. These qualifications include City and Guilds, BTEC, NVQ’s and also postgraduate certificates. Personal Qualities A friendly, confident manner combined with a liking for people of all ages, tact and courtesy, good health and a good skin, a smart and well-groomed appearance are all important. Beauticians need stamina, as they are on their feet for long periods.
